I have a feeling she was asking for it to create controversy. You see, Nicki Minaj was never anything original, she just copies whatever is controversial out there. Her dress style resembles Lady Gaga, and now her song lyrics and videos resemble Rihanna's.

The Power of Justin Bieber, or How the Culture is Controlled by the Elite

In the last days of 2011, Justin Bieber twitted about a song that he really liked, from a singer who was not widely known. The song was Call Me Maybe by Carly Rae Jepsen. This was followed by a follow up tweet by Selena Gomez, and another one that featured a video of Bieber's friends dancing to the music. Just over a month later now, Jepsen has reached number one in her native Canada.

I've often argued with my friends about how the culture we supposedly have is controlled by the elite, and we need to take it back. They don't see the urgency of the problem, but I do. The trouble is that they don't see the scale of the problem. Here's a recent story that illustrates my point.

I have personally been a fan of Carly Rae Jepsen for a long time now. Her music is indeed great. And people like it - people know great music when they hear it. Trouble is that, it took Justin Bieber's tweets for many people to even get to know her. If not for Bieber taking the initiative to introduce Jepsen's music to the world, they would have been continually listening to crap like Katy Perry and Kesha, or perhaps the 'new Rihanna' instead, because that's what the industry wants people to think is cool. What a shame.

Brad Pitt Wavering on Marriage Boycott Pledge

Brad Pitt has famously pledged that he and Angelina Jolie will not marry until marriage equality has been achieved throughout the USA, and we have consistently praised him for it.

However, he now says he may not be able to go the distance and may have to give up some time in the future, citing that marriage equality is not coming to some parts of the US soon. Well, I don't like the news, but I understand what he's saying. I personally doubt marriage equality will arrive in some states before 2050, and I am very confident in my prediction that the US will be the last western country to achieve full marriage equality.

Maybe Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie can instead change their target towards marriage equality in California. That way, they probably only need to wait a few more years.

Looks like it's Shakira.

One way to measure is by twitter and facebook statistics. In both lists, there are only a few living people (i.e. not dead people, not organisations) more popular than Shakira. They are Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Katy Perry, Eminem and Justin Bieber. Nobody over the age of 21 takes Justin Bieber seriously let alone consider him 'famous' in the proper sense of the world, and the others are all infamous really, i.e. more known for controversial or bad deeds.

So, unlikely as it is, Shakira seems to top the list indeed.

Let's get this right. Katy Perry, Kesha and Chris Crocker are not famous - they are notorious. The difference between being famous and being notorious needs to be maintained.

Someone who is famous for great things won't be deemed inappropriate to appear on Sesame street the way Katy Perry was. Not to mention that the LGBT community actually hated 'I Kissed A Girl' (I know because I am a great ally, always keeping up with marriage equality developments on their sites), and nobody straight that I know of actually loved that song either.

Kesha is widely thought to look ugly, not because of how she naturally looks but because of her unkempt, dirty style. She is definitely not someone to look up to.

Chris Crocker would be the most notorious of them all. Just ask any gay guy if they consider him a good representative of their community. I don't know a single one that would answer 'yes'. In fact, if he closed down his Youtube channel, both straight and gay communities alike will have a cause for celebration.

All of these people do have their fans. But so do most notorious people. The key is that they have many more haters than fans, and they are widely known not because of some great attribute, but because of the haters they have and the controversy they cause.

Britney Spears Looks Like A Man

Lady Gaga may want to look like a man, but I don't think she looks like one. However, there's somebody else in Hollywood who may do the job better. Her name? Britney Spears.

The glamourous style of Britney may obscure this fact, but it remains quite observable that Britney Spears looks naturally like a man. In fact, when she shaved her hair a few years back, I saw her on a magazine cover and thought, whose that man?

The two best Britney impersonators I have ever seen are Derrick Barry and Bolee Spears - both gay drag queens. I have seen many people who swore they saw Britney when Derrick was performing. As for the female impersonators - none of them are quite up to that standard. You always clearly know it's not her. Women like Stacey Allemeier and Lorna Bliss have tried everything to look like Britney, but they simply look to feminine to look like her. In fact, I have never met a single woman who looks like Britney Spears. Remember that Lorna Bliss has had extensive surgery and Derrick Barry hasn't, and Derrick still wins hands down in the Britney look-alike race.

In fact, last year when Britney's video for Till the World Ends (a song I don't like at all, by the way) came out, fans accused her of using a MALE double to do the dance moves, which she denied. I remember someone saying 'that's obviously a guy'. The fact that they accused her of using a MALE double rather than a female one shows that, when made up a certain way or filmed from certain angles, Britney does look like a man.

Britney also sounds like a man in some of the ways she sings and talks. People have remarked that Derrick Barry really sounds like Britney, but again I have yet to hear a single woman sound like Britney when they talk or sing.

I have nothing against Britney personally and I think she was pretty when she was younger, but this is something I have wanted to point out for some time. Looking like a man naturally is about the facial features you have, and is not the same as looking like a man because you don't dress well or don't maintain your body well. Therefore, it is possible to 'look like a man' and be pretty at the same time, in my opinion.

Best Music of 2011 Review

As 2011 had just ended, we are going to look at the best and worst music of the year.

Here's the five best tracks, as picked by us:
5. LeAnn Rimes - Give. A great track with a great message, the best LeAnn Rimes song in years undoubtedly.

4. Christina Perri - A Thousand Years. Breaking Dawn was unexpectedly good compared to the rest of the Twilight films, and one of the theme songs, A Thousand Years, was also unexpectedly great, even compared to the rest of Christina Perri's stuff. (The other theme song, Bruno Mars's It Will Rain, was also great.)

3. The whole Tangled Soundtrack. Disney just had the great idea of bringing back their good old formula of great music combined with a great story, and it worked wonders.

2. Lauren Alaina - Like My Mother Does. Lauren is obviously close to her mother, and this song fits her perfectly. Although she came second on American Idol, I thought this song was much better than Scotty McCreery's.

1. Pia Toscano - All in Love is Fair. This year's American Idol was exceptional, but the most exceptional singer from there was Pia Toscano, who was surprisingly eliminated early on.

As 2011 had just ended, we are going to look at the best and worst music of the year.

Here's the five worst tracks, as picked by us:
5. Nicki Minaj - Super Bass. I don't get what she is trying to say, except that 'my name is Nicki Minaj'.

4. LMFAO - Party Rock Anthem. Overrated by 1000 times at least.

3. The Lonely Island feat. Akon - I Just Had Sex. This track belongs in an adults only venue, not on mainstream radio where it aired in mid 2011.

2. LMFAO - Sexy and I Know It. Not even a proper song, not to mention the music video that is much better suited to a gay adults-only place than on family TVs on Sunday morning.

1. Rihanna - We Found Love. Overrated by 1000 times at least, and comes with a music video full of drug references.

Racist Slur Against Rihanna Sign of Deeper Problems

A Dutch magazine editor has been forced to resign after international outrage at racist comments they made against Rihanna.

This does not seem to be an isolated thing. Racism is on the rise in Europe, and I believe it is right wing politicians' fault. Just this year, the Netherlands officially 'moved away' from multiculturalism after years of bashing the idea, and the leaders of Germany, France and the UK all condemned multiculturalism as a failure. And I do deeply believe that rejection of multiculturalism causes an upsurge of racism that cannot be reversed until multiculturalism is endorsed again (hopefully when a centre-left government comes back to power in those countries).

Thankfully, not all leaders are that irresponsible. Even Australia's right wing opposition leader Tony Abbott continues to support multiculturalism, continuing bipartisan support of the concept in that country, even though his views on other things are clearly very right wing.

Rapper Fat Joe is the latest character to be hit by political correctness. He actually said that he believed that hip-hop, known for its severe homophobia, actually has plenty of gay people in it, calling them the Gay Mafia. He doesn't have a problem with them personally.

Trouble is that he used the word mafia, common in hip-hop but not elsewhere. This was labelled as homophobic speech in and of itself by some people.

The gay rights movements needs to learn that political correctness is not going to help them. Marriage equality is the civil rights issue of our time, and it would be a shame if political correctness overshadowed it.

Taylor Swift's video for her single Mean, like the song, has an anti-bullying theme. Specifically, the video is about taking on anti-gay bullying. Which I think is a meaningful and worthy message to send around the world.

Unfortunately, some politically correct gone mad individuals have criticised the video, because in the lyrics she sings 'picking on the weaker man', which is taken to refer to the gay man in the video. Of course, what they mean is that the gay man should not be seen as the weaker man. But this is a message for those who bully people, and those who are being bullied. Those who are being bullied are in a weaker position. She isn't saying that all gay men are weaker. It is clear and simple what she is referring to.

The energy wasted in political correctness would be definitely better used on things like marriage equality.

I think Clinton has a lot of personal vices, was a political opportunist, and is vastly overrated. As a result of an overwillingness to compromise with Republicans, failed health care, Don't Ask Don't Tell (DADT), and the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) were amongst his achievements, as was cutting lots of single mothers from welfare. The current occupant of the White House makes a much better president in my opinion. Americans would be stupid not to give Barack Obama the full 8 years.

Forbes has again published their most powerful women in the world list, and guess what? Lady Gaga and Beyonce Knowles are in the top 20, whilst Julia Gillard and Nancy Pelosi are not!

I just don't get it. Two entertainers who are not even 30 years old and have no political power at all are more powerful than a prime minister and the minority leader in the US house of representatives.

Compare it to the mens' list. I see no entertainers in the top 50. Almost everyone there are political leaders, religious leaders, and business leaders. Does this mean that it's okay to value women less for their actual serious business and more for their entertainment 'contributions'? A bit too sexist, perhaps?

In other news, 40% of people on Sodahead are arch conservatives. Apparently they think whilst the couple are now committed it still mattered that they are not officially 'married'.

This is plain discriminatory, and something we should not condone in 2011. Over 10 years ago an Australian court found IVF laws that excluded cohabiting couples were discriminatory on marital status grounds, whilst the same has been found of New Zealand's adoption laws more recently. Whilst I am all for lifelong commitment, discrimination is stupid, period.

Miley Cyrus has spoken out on public perceptions of her recent behaviour.

"People have very mixed opinions on me; I'm a great role model, or I'm completely inappropriate for anyone under 13 and I am controversial. I don't know how I became this. It's weird. Two complete extremes. I'm not some crazy lady who's gone off the deep end, because I definitely haven't. I just always try to be real. Every 18-year-old explores sexuality and experiments and tries things. For me there's no reason to change that. You have to be true to yourself," she told Prestige magazine.

Whilst I don't really agree with the 'sexuality' part, I agree with the rest of what she is saying.

When I evaluate role models, I usually base it off three things: being nice, embracing the family spirit, and being creative and innovative.

I think Miley is still a great role model overall. Those who think she is inappropriate are usually conservatives, and they don't matter anyway.

Lady Gaga is open about her drug use. Whilst I am okay with people voicing different opinions in society, I have always emphasized that I disagree respectfully with what she is saying, and I urged those who are anti-drug to speak up, as long as they are not being judgmental.

One such person who spoke up is Diana Vickers. She recently told the media that, whilst she liked to party, her mother would lock her up in a room if she became like Amy Winehouse. Not that she herself thought that there was anything wrong with that. This is also not the first time Vickers has spoken out against drug use. Last year, she wrote in the UK Sun that "just because a drug is legal, you cannot assume it is safe." She also told Now Magazine that, regarding her 'experience' with drugs, "I've never tried them and I'm very proud of that." Good on you Diana.

Maybe Lady Gaga isn't the Best Face for Equality

Lady Gaga has done a lot for marriage equality. For this, we probably should thank her. But then, most people of our generation support marriage equality. Gaga's voice is the loudest because her voice has always been one of the loudest on everything in the past few years. But this doesn't mean that Lady Gaga is the best face for equality.

If marriage equality is going to succeed, we need to convert ultra-conservatives. However, Lady Gaga would frighten even just a mainstream conservative, let alone the majority of the anti-equality crowd. When she went on American Idol this year, eventual winner Scott McCreery was seen to be scared of her. And it's not just conservative country McCreery either. I think I would be a bit scared to meet Gaga in person in that kind of a close way too.

Not that people who support equality get people scared usually. Michelle Branch, Allison Iraheta, Alexandra Burke and Diana DeGarmo are known to support equality and none of them are scary. Unlike Lady Gaga, a lot of conservatives like their personality and music. Even the likes of Christina Aguilera and Miley Cyrus can behave properly when they need to. Just not Lady Gaga.

In the end, Lady Gaga is underperforming for marriage equality if anything, as nobody takes her seriously, especially not the conservatives we need to target. If we gave her popularity to somebody else who would advocate equality but not scare people away, we would have achieved much more.

Sesame Street: Ernie and Bert not Gay

The very old debate as to whether Ernie and Bert are gay is settled. "They were created to teach preschoolers that people can be good friends with those who are very different from themselves," but "they remain puppets, and do not have a sexual orientation," Sesame Street said in a statement.

So none of the puppets have a sexual orientation then. This also effectively closes the door on any more such speculation on future puppets they may introduce.

The news is not surprising. Sesame Street was created back when the world was fiercely homophobic, and no mainstream TV show would feature a gay character. It's much older than Harry Potter.

However, calls for the program to feature a transgender character are still possible, because the characters apparently can have a 'gender', just not a 'sexual orientation'. If the LGBT community want inclusion, they can do it this way, I guess.

My New Rebecca Black Theory

I have a new theory about the whole Rebecca Black thing. Nothing here is proven, but just my hypothesis. I used to think that Rebecca Black was a fellow self-made star, and decided to give my support to her rising star. But now I think that even I may have been fooled on this. My hypothesis was that Friday was not what we typically understand a 'viral video' to be at all.

You see, Friday was uploaded onto Youtube and stayed there for a while without becoming a viral video for quite a while, until it was 'picked up' by some website and then quickly picked up by the mainstream media. It was not until that point that it became 'viral'. Very atypical for a viral video, if you ask me.

The mainstream media interest was also atypical. Even middle-aged people who don't use the net much have heard of Rebecca Black - on TV. I don't remember so many TV interviews for Chris Crocker or the Numa Numa guy. Now that Rebecca Black is putting out a new video, the mainstream media are treating it like an event to look forward to. Nobody mentioned Tay Zonday's second single, if I can remember.

Which leads me to my conclusion. Somebody is trying to promote the whole Rebecca Black thing. For what - I don't know. But one thing I almost know for sure - she ain't a self made star.

Gay Soldiers Don't Receive Spousal Benefits in US

It is becoming clear now that even if Don't Ask, Don't Tell is repealed and gay people can serve openly in the US military, they will not be eligible for spousal benefits. This is because the benefits in the US are allocated solely by marital status and gay marriages are not considered valid under US federal law because of DOMA.

This highlights two wrongs, and they certainly don't make one right either.

First, the DOMA needs to be repealed. President Barack Obama, who is definitely the most pro-gay equality president to date, has promised he will do this. I believe pro-equality Americans should give him a second term just because of this.

Second, partner benefits should be available to all domestic partners, not just those who are considered married under the law. This is already the case in many countries.
